Pope's words are wise

Thank you for printing Kathryn Lopez's article about Pope Francis and moral guideposts ("Pope Francis has message for all of us," July 31). She writes of the new pope, visiting in Rio, and calling for a "culture of solidarity, seeing others not as rivals or statistics, but brothers and sisters" what "builds up and leads to a more habitable world." She writes of the pope speaking of a "selfishness that prevails in our society," those who "follow the logic of power and money at any cost," to confront problems "by promoting greater justice, educating young people in the values that build up life in society, accompanying those in difficulty and giving them hope for the future" and that "we must hold the hand of the one in need." Lopez writes of "moral guideposts being celebrated in Rio that can enrich our civic lives and help civil society flourish." And, she says, "Whatever you believe, perhaps we can at least all start with respect for our common human dignity, which no culture, no form of politics, no addiction should rob us of. And thank God for that." Her observations and concern for humanity are well noted. While it appears the pope may have been only speaking about drug "dealers of death," it appears to me to be timely and pertain to all the "selfishness that prevails in our society," those who "follow the logic of power and money at any cost." The pope's words are wise indeed.
