Political ads offer problems, no solutions

Today's political mailing included a 9-inch by 11-inch glossy card that, among other things, blames Democrat Walter Dalton for tuition increases exceeding 140 percent at the NC Community Colleges and the University of North Carolina. Never mind that these increases took place over the course of a decade (dating back to 2002). Instead, let us ask why, aside from inflation and legislative mandates to expand, might tuition have increased so much? What the advertisers (who list the Republican Governors' Association and the Republican State Leadership Committee first and second among their donors) neglect to say is that tuition increases have only partially offset the draconian cuts imposed by the Republican legislature. Thus the ad is an outstanding example of propaganda, as the Democratic opponent is blamed for a situation created by the Republican legislature. The only honest thing about the advertisement is the total lack of a proposed solution, because you can either invest public funds in the public universities, or demand tuition dollars to do so. By providing only misleading statistics and no solutions, the Republican donors behind this ad have declared ideological bankruptcy. Please help me foreclose on them at the polls this November.
