Grateful for reading help

As a reading teacher at Parkway School, I have seen firsthand the effects of budget cuts in the last few years. The loss of teacher and teaching assistant positions has limited the amount of one-on-one support that we can provide for students in reading.

However, I am so grateful to live in a community such as Watauga that values education. During this school year, 19 individuals have given their time on a consistent basis to tutor or mentor a kindergarten, first or second grade student in reading. These volunteers are parents, Appalachian State University students and community members. They have played a vital role in the growth of our students.

I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to the following people: Terry Dolbier, Cathia Silver, Nicole Higgins, Anna Freeman, Kelly Kitson, Chris, Cole, Hannah Faulkner, Lilly Ketchum, Bradley McMahan, Angela Miller, Deb Meyer, Holly Robinson, Jamie Eller, Tricia Hayes, Deb Gooch, Leigh Girard, Lesley Lambert, Richard O'Donnell and Karen Osborne. Our students are stronger readers because of these people.
