Decision could make Boone more dangerous
The Boone Town Council decision to move to ban concealed weapons in town parks, town property and other places is unconstitutional, unsafe and ignores any coherent facts about guns. As an Appalachian State University student and National Rifle Association member, it appalls me and makes me feel unsafe. The Second Amendment is the law of the land, whether members of the council know it or not. We, as law abiding citizens, do have the right to carry a firearm. The Constitution doesn't say, the right to bear arms except for here, here and here. The “gun free zone” was dreamed up by liberals years ago in order to give the government they love so much, more power. To not allow law-abiding, good citizens to carry a firearm in more places within the town of Boone makes it much more dangerous. “Gun-free zones” are a criminals' heaven. Think about all the places where true gun violence has happened over the years — Columbine, Virginia Tech (twice), the Holocaust museum ... all gun-free zones. You never see a criminal shoot up a place where citizens are exercising their Second Amendment right on a large scale. How does the town council get off on forcing us into doing this, even after the state legislature did a good job of passing a pro-Second Amendment Castle Doctrine?
Has there been any widespread shootings in Boone? Criminals don't pay attention to the law, that's why they're criminals. So, if the council believes that banning weapons in certain areas will deter criminals, they are either ignorant or blatantly ignoring the facts that criminals will now come to those areas more often.
I really hope the council thinks twice before enacting this monstrosity, and if they proceed, I hope a lawyer sues to the highest court. I'll back them up all the way.
We can either have safe places like Vermont, Wyoming, Alaska and Arizona, that allow citizens to carry guns without concealed weapon permits, without many restrictions, and have some of the lowest gun problems in the country, or we can be like New York and Washington, D.C., where law-abiding citizens live under tyrannous conditions and are not safer for it.Jeremi
