Community support aids WYN efforts

Miranda Martin, Chloe Tipton, Candice Corbin and Adam Russell, students from Appalachian State University's recreation management department, would like to thank everyone who contributed to making the program possible for us, the Western Youth Network students and future WYN trips and programs.

Thanks to your time and efforts, we were able to plan and implement a climbing day at Mountain Alliance's Alpine Tower for local middle school students.

Western Youth Network and Mountain Alliance are local nonprofits that work with different age groups in Watauga County, but they both are geared toward exposing students to the outdoors, helping with homework and generally enriching their lives with adventure and challenge. The climbing day was a real success, but it was about more than just climbing. We were able to expose the middle school students to a few of the Mountain Alliance high school members and talk to them about what the transition to high school will be like, helping to bridge the gap between the two schools. We would also like to thank local businesses for generous donations. It was because of their help that the students were able to climb at no charge, and the Western Youth Network now has extra funding to go toward its next adventure.
