A foundation for caregivers

The holiday season is a special time of giving and receiving gifts, and this year is particularly meaningful to me as I reflect on the many wonderful gifts that have been received by the High Country Caregiver Foundation.
Our family caregivers have benefited from gifts of sponsorships, financial support, time and proceeds from fundraising events that have been provided by you and other generous members of our community. We simply could not be a resource for family caregivers without these gifts from the many individuals and businesses that consistently support the High Country Caregiver Foundation. Through your generosity, we have been able to award 183 $500 respite vouchers to family caregivers in Avery and Watauga counties since the program began in fall 2007.
As I look back on this year with gratitude for all of the community support that we receive, I am looking ahead to 2012 with anticipation and optimism. I am confident that it will be a year which will bring increased understanding of the many issues that face family caregivers along with additional funding for our programs.
HCCF remains committed to fundraising that will help us realize our mission of creating awareness of caregiving issues and improving the quality of life for caregivers and those they care for through advocacy, information and referral, education, emotional support and respite and support services.
This magical time can often be bittersweet for family members who care for an elderly or disabled relative. The holidays can be a painful reminder of the many things these loved ones cannot do: carols they cannot sing, cookies they cannot bake, presents they cannot open and people they cannot remember. This season can be especially difficult for the families of the chronic and terminally ill.
To those of you who are caregivers, I wish you a joyous and restful holiday. Again, thank you for your gifts and for sharing them so freely with the High Country Caregiver Foundation. I wish you a happy, healthy holiday season with peace, love and laughter in the new year.
