Summer boon is winter help

The weather outside isn't exactly frightful. It may be a bit overcast this week, but it will be pleasantly warm — maybe a bit wet, but typical for spring in the High Country.

But now is the time to think about winter.

WAMY Community Action, a nonprofit serving low-income families in Watauga, Avery, Mitchell and Yancey counties, is in a rare position for a service organization: available funding for specific projects and few applicants.

Through additional funding from the American Recover and Reinvestment Act, WAMY is searching for qualified residents in need of home weatherization. Through the funding, residents earning as much as 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines (about $29,000 for a family of two) can obtain as much as $6,000 to lower power bills through energy efficiency and appliance upgrades.

The organization has an especial need for clients in Watauga County. But all potential clients should apply now — well in advance of the High Country's next winter, and the nonprofit's December funding deadline. Visit the organization at http://www.wamycommunityaction.org or call (828) 264-2421.
