Our view: School season breaks in on soggy summer
Thumbs-up: to a return to school with few snags and bumps. An especial thumbs-up to our seasoned educators and school staff returning after a soggy summer. A welcome to our new teachers and other staff members -- you've landed in one of the most successful school districts in North Carolina, and we can't wait to see the great things you will achieve.
Thumbs-up: to the 2013 Red Kettle season. Yes, that season is more than three months away, but the Greater Hickory/High Country Salvation Army Command is now recruiting volunteers. Volunteers are especially important to the annual fundraiser in helping to keep labor costs low. The goal is to increase the volunteer force in the amount of about $20,000 in savings -- money that can then flow back into community service. Perspective Watauga County volunteers can call Lt. Michal Chapman at (828) 851-3167 or email email@example.com.
Thumbs-up: to Blood, Sweat and Gears' donations, including $4,000 to Hunger and Health Coalition and $50,000 to the American Red Cross. This annual event continues to grow, and our community is much better off for it.
