Our View: Vote of no confidence

Thumbs-down: to computer glitches plaguing the State Board of Elections Tuesday. Major issues with the state's website made a long night for many candidates, county board of election offices, media outlets and the general public -- in other words, just about everyone in the state. Glitches causing the office to count precincts as 100 percent reporting when only early voting and absentee ballots had been received caused counts to jump and down the website board all Tuesday night.

Kim Westbrook Strach, State Board of Elections executive director, blamed the error on poor programming following the release of the vendor who had handled the site for years in favor of internalizing the operation. The director failed to indicate what drove the change, but showcasing an inferior website for something as important as ballot counts is a major black eye on Strach's team.

Thumbs-up: to the efforts of Samaritan's Purse as they recently responded to tornado destruction across the South and Midwest. In all, the Boone-based Christian relief organization sent teams to Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Kansas, and monitored flooding in Florida during a two-day period in late April.

Thumbs-up: to May flowers. You know it's spring when there's no snow on Grandfather Mountain in April. Winter officially ended on Grandfather in April with rain, but no recorded snowfall. The year's total snowfall at the site's main gate was just 32 inches -- far short of the 55 inches received last season.
