Our View: Turning off the tap?

Thumbs-up: to Kelly Baruth on being named Counselor of the Year for 2012 by Watauga County Schools. Baruth is the student counselor at Blowing Rock School, and a large part of the excellence for which that school is noted. We wish her luck now as her nomination for Middle School Counselor of the Year for North Carolina propels her into statewide competition.

Thumbs-down: to an expression of "surprise" on the part of Boone as its water intake project faces opposition by Ashe County commissioners. Property rights are sacred in the High Country, and at issue is an access road crossing the Ashe County line. Ashe commissioners say, "We have been told all along ... that the water project would not be coming into Ashe County." With the investment already made on this project, communication shouldn't be an afterthought.

Thumbs-up: to the word that a store serving Cove Creek is not closing, but undergoing new ownership and renovations. This community landmark has stood for five decades as a beacon for necessities and local gatherings.
