Our View: Thursday fun run takes on important local challenge
Thursday morning, beginning at 10, Boone law enforcement officers and other supporters will run side by side with Special Olympians in an annual Special Olympians Torch Run. The route begins and ends at the Boone Police Department, and loops through Appalachian State University on Rivers Street.
As a show of support for our local athletes who work through intellectual challenges to compete in the annual games, there is no finer event.
As a fundraiser and way to raise awareness, there is no event more important.
Law enforcement officers throughout North Carolina and the High Country have partnered with Special Olympics since 1987 to raise the money needed to provide training and to host the annual games for athletes with intellectual disabilities. During last year alone, more than $1 million was raised through T-shirt sales, corporate sponsors and other fundraisers.
Donation opportunities and T-shirt sales will be available before the Thursday run at the Boone Police Department.
And for the best view of the event, local athletes are invited to join runners and Olympians in a show of support.
