Our View: Stricter standards increase GED value

Thumbs-up: even in the midst of tragedy, to the outpouring of tribute paid to fallen Deputy William Mast Jr. Thousands of people attended Deputy Mast's funeral, and hundreds more lined the processional route. Every hero should be so honored as this officer who gave his life in the line of duty.

Thumbs-up: to increasing general educational development certificate standards. In 2014, the tests will require more core curriculum knowledge and will be a more true benchmark of student learning. The upside: students who work hard will have more valuable and worthwhile proof of education. But the downsides: the exams are more expensive and require computer proficiency.

Thumbs-up: to public input, and input especially relevant to Watauga County. The N.C. Department of Transportation is inviting comment about its developing statewide and pedestrian plan. Safety is at issue - view the plan and respond at http://www.walkbikenc.com.
