Our View: Stargazing and shooting for the stars

Thumbs-up: to stargazing, and the increased opportunity to do so, now that Appalachian State University has officially opened the Jo and Don Cline Visitor Center at the university's Dark Sky Observatory. With the visitor center, researchers, students and visitors can get a peek inside the inner workings of the facility. Public viewing nights will be held monthly, including this month, on Saturday.

Thumbs-up: to giving Boone the business. The Boone Business expo is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at the Boone Mall, and with it comes the opportunity to visit with more than four dozen local businesses in one setting. Giveaways and contests are part of the day.

Thumbs-up: but for one night only, as the 13th annual Shooting Stars performance kicks off at 6:30 p.m. today at the Ross Auditorium at Watauga High School. This is not only the annual talent show for students from all nine schools, it's a major fundraiser for the Watauga Education Foundation's teacher grant program. Seating is limited. Visit wataugaeducationfoundation.org for more information.

Thumbs-up: to the High Country Women of the Year. We don't know yet know who they are, but you might -- applications are now being accepted for nominees in four categories: volunteer, heritage preservation, professional and advocacy. Winners will be presented June 29 at the third annual All About Women Expo at Watauga High School. For more information or to submit a nomination, contact All About Women magazine editor Sherrie Norris at (sherrie@aawmag.com)
