Our View: Salute 75 years in the making

Thumbs-up: to a groundbreaking 75 years in the making. Boy Scout Troop 109 of Boone broke ground Sept. 3 on what will become the troop's own meeting and activity center -- after three-quarters of a century without its own home. The new building couldn't be more deserved -- Troop 109 is today composed of about 50 members, and its legacy of leadership and citizenship training is well recognized: More than 200 scouts in the troop have achieved scouting's highest rank of Eagle.

Thumbs-up: to action in place of rhetoric. While the United States and other nations continue to define actions to take against Syrian leaders and a stockpile of chemical weapons, Boone-based Samaritan's Purse has been assisting refugees who are now fleeing the country. The United Nations estimates that almost 7 million Syrians need some form of humanitarian aid, and a team from Samaritan's Purse has been in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq assisting refugees since late August.

Thumbs-up: to a program that provides free smoke alarms to those who qualify. The alarms are provided through a grant obtained by Watauga County Firefighters Association. Call (828) 264-4235 for more information.

Thumbs-up and -down: to the nearly 2,900 statewide DWI arrests during the Labor Day "Booze It & Lose It" campaign. Law enforcement officers from across the state conducted the campaign, and while we're pleased that 2,866 drunk drivers were removed from the road -- including 13 in Watauga County -- we're disappointed that this number only reflects in a small way the number of individuals who still make the wrong decision to get behind the wheel after they've been drinking.
