Our View: Procession fitting for longtime businessman

Thumbs-up: to a fitting send-off for the late Wayne Hampton. Hampton founded Hampton's Body Shop and Towing Service of Boone more than five decades ago, and the tradition of service is today being carried on by his family. Hampton's sons arranged a unique honor for their father. On Wednesday, a fleet of tow trucks formed an honor guard procession with Hampton's coffin resting on the back of a tow truck. A crowd approaching the numbers that rivaled the viewing of President Barack Obama's visit to Boone in 2011 turned out to watch the respectful procession.

Thumbs-up: to an information session scheduled for Monday that will allow the community the opportunity to share ideas about potential one-stop locations for 2014 elections. The citizen workshop scheduled by the Watauga County Board of Elections will be held 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Watauga County Administration Building.

Thumbs-up: to a fundraising effort for the Appalachian Theatre of the High Country that has so far netted $3 million toward restoration. A request for a small land donation from Boone to build a wing onto the existing downtown structure has been requested by the nonprofit ATHC organizers.
