Our View: Police action deserves salute
Yet, while most community service associated with our local officers is of the mandatory, court-ordered variety, between now and Jan. 3 the Boone Police Department's holiday food drive offers an opportunity for volunteer service.
Nonperishable food -- peanut butter, jelly, cereal and canned pasta meals are especially sought -- brought to the department will be collected to aid the work of the Hunger and Health Coalition, which distributes food, medication and firewood to more than 1,600 children and 1,000 elderly people monthly in the Boone area.
The Boone Police Department is taking the lead on this effort, but they can't do it alone. Food items can be left in the police department's front lobby.
