Our View: Not so fast, that's road assessment, not cruise control
Thumbs-up: to a suggestion from Boone Town Council council
member Lynne Mason to tread carefully before erecting new roads through established neighborhoods.
Town Manager Greg Young would like a new road stretching from the Broyhill Events Center to N.C. 105
— and he could be right in his assessment that the thoroughfare is needed to ease congestion
during special events. Or he could be wrong. Despite a presentation of the project to N.C.
Department of Transportation, town council members have yet to fully review a formal presentation.
That step is vital in pursuing any roadway project.
Thumbs-up: also to Boone Town Council action as it prepares to address recent action by the N.C. General Assembly that could allow concealed weapons in certain public places, including some town parks. There's much to debate on both sides of this coin, and it's up to council members to reach out to the community in considering new town ordinances outlining concealed weapon bans.
Thumbs-up: to the hundreds of Appalachian State University students who successfully met the school's annual MLK Challenge to provide a day of community service. Cleaning, rebuilding and organizing projects across the county paid fitting tribute to the work of Martin Luther King Jr.
Thumbs-up: to the possibility that the Broyhill Events Center could be available for public events. There are few other venues in the county able to support sizable crowds as needed. This is a public service for which we hope university officials will vote for the needs of our community.
