Our View: Mentoring, maps and missions

Thumbs-up: for the opportunity to make a difference. OASIS (Opposing Abuse with Service, Information and Shelter) needs community members to assist with its crisis line. Becoming a crisis line volunteer isn't for everybody, but volunteers answering crisis calls are vital to OASIS's mission to serve victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Watauga County. Volunteers answer calls from home once or twice a month, in the evenings and during weekends only. No experience is needed, but an 18-hour training program must be completed. Call (828) 264-1532 to learn more about the program or set up an interview.
Thumbs-up: to a new Blue Ridge Parkway feature -- the ability to view an online road closure map. The map will help drivers learn about real-time closures resulting from weather or construction, including the ability to zoom in on exact mile-markers. The parkway runs for 469 miles, making this tool valuable from Cherokee to Waynesboro, Va.
Thumbs-up: to lifelong mentors. January was National Mentoring Month, the importance of which was on display in an essay competition sponsored by the Watauga Youth Network. Submitted essays each explained personally why mentoring matters. The top two in three age divisions were reprinted in Sunday's Watauga Democrat. Our congratulations to the winners and all those who shared their stories.
