Our View: Mastering challenges

Thumbs-up: to challenging our high school students to be the best learners they can be. A new program, credit by mastery, will allow students who have mastered a subject the opportunity to earn pass credit and advance in their education without course enrollment. Colleges and universities routinely do this, and it makes sense for our best and brightest at the high school level.

Thumbs-up: to two decades of sweat equity as Watauga County Habitat for Humanity notes its 20th anniversary. The Christian ministry recently broke ground on its 25th home in its mission to provide decent and affordable housing to low-income county residents.

Thumbs-up: to new direction, via a new director for Boone's traditional outdoor drama, "Horn in the West." The board of Southern Appalachian Historical Association announced Teresa Lee as director for the 2014 season. Lee promises to revise the script to cast events as more historically accurate. We are also curious about her work on the dialogue -- in making it more familiar to modern ears. We wish Lee and her team a successful season as she prepares to advance what, for many, has become a mountain tradition.

Thumbs-up: to the founder and longtime director of the nonprofit Mountain Home Music concert series as he is recognized by the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, presented to citizens of North Carolina in recognition of their statewide efforts. Volumes could be written about Shannon's work -- and have been -- but this prestigious recognition was long overdue. We congratulate Shannon on his achievement.
