Our View: In memorial, honors and the business of art

Thumbs-up: to life well lived. The outpouring of the community following the death of Mack Brown is testament to the service, both in business and philanthropy, he showed to the people of Watauga County. Online postings and personal recollections of this Southern gentleman speak to what we can all only aspire to in our lives — making a positive difference in the world.

Thumbs-up: to a Western Youth Network, MADD and SADD luncheon honoring local law enforcement. In addition to the event honoring the service members, WYN staff extended much-needed grants to Watauga County Sheriff's Office and Boone Police Department.

Thumbs-up: to the efforts of Deep Gap residents Jim and Sue Taylor in developing a local camp for children with autism and their families. The can-do efforts of the Taylors will fill a community void too few of us even knew existed.

Thumbs-up or thumbs-down: you decide. Boone Town Council action prompts the Watauga County Arts Council to move after 26 years at the Jones House. WCAC has received offers to house its operations elsewhere and this opens new opportunities for the organization. Still, details such as the location of the rapidly approaching Summer Concerts on the Lawn are in transition. Other details not yet clear: Why does the town of Boone suddenly want to be in the arts business?
