Our View: Holiday's swan song

Thumbs-up: to a goodbye to sales tax ... at least on certain items and for this weekend only. The annual North Carolina sales tax holiday begins today and lasts until Sunday on items including clothing, shoes, many school supplies and, depending on cost, sports equipment, computers and computer supplies. Make this weekend's shopping a memorable event -- it could be the last such holiday. Tax-reform legislation eliminates the event in 2014.

Thumbs-up: to driver awareness. A new traffic light has been installed at the intersection of N.C. 105 and Poplar Grove Road in Boone. Once it's fully operational, it could yet come as a surprise to some drivers. Also to watch for: new pedestrian signals at the intersection that will fully function once the town completes sidewalks and wheelchair ramps.

Thumbs-down: to about five feet of rain that we've sloshed through so far this year in the High Country. That's a lot of water. Thumbs-up: To a better way to enjoy getting splashed in the summer -- try the Blowing Rock pool complex. A hint: an hour beginning at 5 p.m.  daily is dedicated to adult lap swimming only.

Thumbs-up: to efforts recognized. FARM Cafe of Boone was recently honored for its work in feeding the hungry through "eTowns" E-Chievement Award on National Public Radio.
