Our View: Faith in adversity
Thumbs-up: to Lt. Gen. William “Jerry” Boykin and the message of faith he brought to the High Country Aug. 25. Boykin was a seminal member of the U.S. Army’s Delta Force who rose through the ranks to reach the highest echelons of military service. No rank was more important, though, than his current mission of leading Kingdom Warriors. That Boykin’s life is an inspiration for us all resonates through his service, three published books and speaking engagements that take him around the world.
Thumbs-up: to a full dose of diversity as Watauga County Schools prepares to host a group of Pakistani students and teachers this winter. The exchange program is coordinated by Appalachian Student University following a grant worth more than quarter of a million dollars from the U.S. Embassy in the capital of Pakistan, Islamabad. Students from three schools and local families will host the group of 20 students and teachers from Taxila, Pakistan.
Thumbs-up: to a Watauga County Public Library initiative to put e-readers into the hands of senior readers who may need assistance reading conventional books. The readers will be made available to those in residential elder care facilities and the homebound through a collaboration with the Project on Aging.
Thumbs-up: to Cove Creek Volunteer Fire Department for going the extra mile — and extra hour — in saving the life of a Cove Creek man. After performing CPR for an hour and 47 minutes, the fight to save a life was successful — a lesson in perseverance for us all.
