Our View: Eight families to go, we're close to the finish

Thumbs-up: to 252 down and eight Hunger and Health Coalition Sharing Tree families to go, as of Thursday. A monumental task — providing for the Christmas needs of 260 families — is now nearing 100 percent completion. There's still time to help through Christmas Eve. Call (828) 262-1628.
Thumbs-up: to Darcy Grimes, the Bethel Elementary teacher recently named regional teacher of the year. As one of only nine teachers — out of 97,000 — across the state to receive the honor, Grimes is in rare company. A side note: Grimes is also a product of Appalachian State University, a further indication of the top caliber of educators graduating from that institution.
Thumbs-up or down: You decide. A 4-mile stretch of highway widening in Blowing Rock will be welcome — once the work is done. But with work scheduled to begin Jan. 2 and to involve more than three years of traffic delays and odd patterns, it's a bit premature to lay out the welcome mat. Welcome to Boone, Blowing Rock drivers.
Thumbs-up: to sound fiscal health. A positive financial audit shows Watauga County's assets exceed liabilities by more than $110 million, debt decreased by about $5.3 million and net assets are more than $1.7 million last year's. That's a healthy dose of good news in this overall unhealthy economy.
