Our View: Driven to action

Thumbs-down: to the potential for aggressive towing. We weren't there, and there's enough "he said, he said" to keep everyone guessing, but that an alleged incident involving a towing company and an occupied vehicle reached not only the ears of Boone Town Council, but their pens, speaks volumes about the enforcement of illegal parking in the town. We wouldn't have imagined that the council would have had to authorize our town attorney to write a draft amending the Municipal Code to prohibit the towing of occupied vehicles, but they did -- and in so doing removed at least one ember sure to spark an altercation or two in a Boone parking lot.

Thumbs-up: to making the right calls, even if it might mean a longer work and school year for educators and students. While winter weather may have forced a recent week off from school, and contributed to the possible extension of the school year into the second week of June, school system officials made it clear that safety is the No. 1 priority. With a recent spate of fender benders and vehicle collisions due to cold, snow and ice as an indication, conservative school planning is the right course.

Thumbs-up: to temporary rate reductions for Blue Ridge Electric Membership Cooperation members. The February -- a high-usage month -- reduction is welcome news to 74,000 energy customers in Watauga and surrounding counties.

Thumbs-up: to the more than 100 WinterFest Polar Plunge jumpers braving the 36 degree water of Chetola Lake for a good cause on Saturday. Jumpers were greeted to temperatures hovering in the low 20s upon exiting the water, but perhaps warmed by knowing that their efforts helped raise thousands of dollars for the Watauga Humane Society and the Western Youth Network.
