Our View: Down the political rabbit hole we go, but where's Alice?
Thumbs-down: to the Sen. Dan Soucek-inspired extraterritorial jurisdiction bill that gets more mired in state politics everyday. While a bill that would strip a single town, Boone, of its ETJ powers has no place before the General Assembly, our local lawmakers do. So, as this misguided bill was being debated by a House committee, where was Rep. Jonathan Jordan? Despite arguments that the bill merited further study, Jordan was absent to lend his voice. Committee approval was granted in a 10-9 vote.
Thumbs-up: to recent NASCAR champ Clint Bowyer as he paid tribute to a Valle Crucis boy who is battling lymphoma. Bowyer's team went full force in supporting 11-year-old Brady Bakken — including stripping Clint Bowyer's name from the passenger side of the No. 15 Toyota and replacing it with Brady's name for a race in Sonoma, Calif., on Sunday. After Bowyer rode into Victory Lane, he celebrated by sending out prayers to Brady — a class act.
Thumbs-down: to the number of blood donations to the American Red Cross in the month of June. The ARC is in a state of emergency need nationwide, and that includes the High Country. Visit http://www.redcrossblood.org to find a local blood drive.
Thumbs-down: and a second mention of Rep. Jonathan Jordan. Jordan's move to thwart passage of Boone's water intact project will probably die in committee, the state representative says. How convenient: Jordan gets to make nice with Ashe County while deflecting a real threat to Boone? Watauga County will not view this as water under the bridge.
