Our View: Don't let the baton pass without you

Because the race to defeat cancer is far from over, Watauga County's upcoming 18th Relay For Life is more important than ever.

Planning for the local edition of the American Cancer Society's signature fundraiser begins early — in essence, it's a year-'round project to prepare for the 24-hour event — and now is the time to begin forming both your commitment and team. The county's first meeting for its June 15 Relay event is 6 p.m. Monday in the fellowship hall of Boone's First Baptist Church. At that time, veteran, new and potential team members will learn about the effort's national trends and local opportunities. Local achievements from the county's 2011 event will also be recognized.

Watauga County has earned national attention not only in the amount of money raised for cancer research, cure and prevention, but in participation. That's a trend of which to be proud, and a trend to continue.
