Our View: Donors need apply
The statistics are familiar: Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. More than 41,000 blood donations are needed every day. A total of 30 million blood components are transfused each year in the United States. And this, a single car accident can require as many as 100 pints of blood, the American Red Cross reports.
But beyond the statistics is the High Country need. Blood is a perishable commodity. Most red blood cells must be used within 42 days, and donated platelets must be used within five days.In other words, donations are constantly needed.
Today is the 2014 Media Challenge Blood Drive -- but you don't need to be a member of the media to donate.
All you need to be is someone who cares.
Today's blood drive is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Perkinsville Baptist Church on Jefferson Road in Boone.
