Our View: Community support
Thumbs-up: to a Watauga High School sophomore who turned a Sweet 16 into a fundraiser for the hungry. Forgoing gifts for herself, Madison Winebarger asked guests to bring to her party food for the Hunger & Health Coalition. This event, in addition to the support WHS students showed the HHC during Saturday's Empty Bowls, promises that a new generation of caring individuals is on tap to make our community a better place to live.
Thumbs-up: to the support, with a thumbs-down to the need. Blue ribbons throughout the county this month promote child abuse prevention and awareness. While we wish there were no need for such recognition, the problem plagues our state. In 2013, N.C. Child Advocacy Centers alone investigated more than 7,000 cases of suspected child abuse throughout 78 counties.
Thumbs-up: and make that way, way up, to an Appalachian State University professor, Joseph Pollock, who was on the team that discovered the first ring system around an asteroid. The team's finding was published in the March 26 edition of Nature and at http://www.eso.org.
