Our View: Citing service and a top-notch state university

Thumbs-up: to a formal citation of the impact Deputy William Mast Jr.'s life made on our community, before he was killed in the line of duty. A unanimous resolution passed by the Watauga County Board of Commissioners honored the life and service of the 23-year-old deputy, and sealed the gratitude of a grateful community that men and women such as Mast live the words, “service above self.”

Thumbs-up: to returning Appalachian State University students. ASU students bring vitality, energize our community and their absence during semester breaks is noticed. Also noticed once classes resume, is that there are a lot more bodies about our downtown arena. Drivers take note. Parking may be a bit scarce and downtown commutes may take a bit longer — all part and parcel of housing a university in our backyard.

Thumbs-up: to another part of that parcel — the recognition that goes along with it. ASU ranks No. 10 in sustainability according to SIERRA magazine. That ranking puts ASU at the top of U.S. colleges for making important efforts in solving climate problems and operating with sustainability in mind. Boone is in fine company with schools in much larger communities including Atlanta, Seattle, Hartford and Irvine.

Thumbs-up: to Western Youth Networks’ spotlight on underage drinking. “Talk It Up Watauga” is a conversation worth having with our children, and will aid in making our homes a “no underage drinking zone.”
