Our View: A historic climb
Thumbs-down: to a meeting handled with less professionalism than was called for. The reception Boone Mayor Andy Ball received when he spoke before the Watauga County Board of Commissioners to request the county reverse course on changes made to sales tax distribution was not in fitting with the dignity due a meeting of political bodies -- even dueling political bodies. Decorum, no matter how contentious the issue, must trump emotion if, in the words of Commissioner Billy Kennedy, our lawmakers indeed desire to "work toward a solution that benefits everyone" -- in all matters that concern town and county.
Thumbs-up: to a call by Appalachian State University for consistency reporting of the campus crime parameters involving the Clery Act. Without fair and consistent recording measures in place, perspective and current students, faculty and staff truly have no idea of an apples-to-apples comparison of campus crime among educational institutions.
Thumbs-up: to today, April 18. Why? It's three days past tax filing day, welcoming a national sigh of relief -- unless you've joined the millions of Americans who have filed for a six-month extension, and a delayed sigh.
