William Mast Memorial Ride set for May 25

Local motorcyclists and supporters are invited to join in the inaugural William Mast Memorial Ride on May 25, an event that will raise money for a scholarship in memory of the fallen deputy.

Mast, 23, died July 26, 2012, while responding to a call.

"This is just something to carry on his name, keep his name alive," said Deputy William Gilliam, who is helping to coordinate the ride.

Ride registration will occur from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. May 25 at Watauga High School at 300 Go Pioneers Drive. The fee is $20 for a single rider or $25 for a rider with passenger.

The pack will travel U.S. 421 South to Brownwood Road, onto Railroad Grade Road and Three Top Road and through the scenic High Country before returning to the high school, Gilliam said.

Following the ride, cyclists and community members can enjoy a barbecue meal from Big Mo's, along with door prizes, silent auction, a 50/50 drawing and entertainment from Blue Country.

Classic car owners are invited to cruise in to enjoy the festivities.

The money raised will go toward the William Mast Memorial Scholarship, which will benefit a Watauga High School senior interested in a career in emergency services, including law enforcement, firefighting or medical services.

Gilliam encouraged any community member -- motorcycle rider or not -- to attend in Mast's memory.

"He used to really enjoy riding, and his family really wanted this to happen," Gilliam said.
