Watauga Swim Team competes in state meet

by Staff Reports

From left, Grace Temple, Ella Campbell, Madie Darner, Caroline Forsyth and Reed Conner of the Watauga Swim Team recently made their mark at the N.C. State Long Course Swim Championships held this summer in Charlotte.

While many kids have been spending summertime sleeping in late, the committed group has been at 7 a.m. swim practice many mornings this year. Many of those days also included dry-land training in addition to the two hours of swimming each morning, according to their coaches.

The following swimmers qualified for the state championship, held July 13-15, in these events: Grace Temple, 50- and 100-meter butterfly; Reed Conner, 50- and 100-meter freestyle; Madie Darner, 50- and 100-meter freestyle and 50-meter backstroke; Ella Campbell, 50-, 100- and 200-meter breaststroke; Caroline Forsyth, 50-, 100- and 200-meter breaststroke, 50- and 100-meter butterfly, 50-, 100- and 200-meter freestyle.

Forsyth and Campbell each medaled in all three of their breaststroke events, helping the team earn enough points to place 17th overall in the state.

Forsyth, Temple, Campbell and Darner also represented the Watauga Swim Team in the 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle relays. The relay team was 11th fastest in the state.

The team is coached this summer by Jodi Cash, JD Dove, Nicole Higgins and Tera Darner. The swimmers had outstanding qualifying times at recent meets in Shelby, Greensboro and Lenoir that placed them among the best swimmers in the state.
