Watauga Marine Corps League to hold BBQ fundraiser

The Marine Corps League 1320 Mountaineer Detachment will hold a Barbecue Sale and Pig Pickin' at the Boone Moose Lodge from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.

Plates will cost $10 and all proceeds will be used to assist veterans in Watauga and Avery counties.

This will be the league's first barbecue sale. Members will be cooking 200 pounds of pork, including a whole pig. Plates will be taken to go.

The Marines Corps League 1320 Mountaineer Detachment was chartered in 2008 and has 28 names on its roster.

"We are always seeking membership from Marines that have served more than 180 days and received an honorable discharge," Chuck Wright, of Watauga County League, said. "Our detachment needs to grow. We meet on the first Monday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Boone Moose Lodge."

The group aims to preserve the traditions and promote the interests of the U.S. Marine Corps and support those who are serving in the corps, as well as those who have been honorably discharged from the service.

The organization has a long history, having been formed in 1923. The Marine Corps League is the only congressionally chartered Marine Corps-related veterans organization in the United States.

The league supports the interests of Marines, including assistance for Marines and their families through the Wounded Marines Program, benefits and entitlements of active duty personnel, as well as veterans benefits programs affecting former and retired Marines, and taking part in the annual Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign and participating in patriotic functions.

"We need to help and maintain programs for veterans as we are sworn to do," Wright said. "Our motto is 'Marines helping Marines.' There are about 88,000 members over all in the U.S. Marine Corps League."

"The money raised from the pig pickin' will be used to assist veterans and programs," Wright said. "The big program we support is Toys for Tots. We also plan to build two handicap ramps for veterans in need and make contributions to veteran causes."

There will be a cash door prize drawing at 6 p.m. When a ticket is purchased, the buyer's name and phone number will go on the ticket and into the drawing. The winner will be contacted after the drawing.

BBQ Sale tickets may be purchased in advance, from league members, or plates will be sold the day of the event. To purchase tickets, contact Wright at (828) 443-5944, Jon Sigmon at (828) 964-7294 or Kris Fowler at (828) 260-2981.
