WHS seniors awarded scholarships

Dozens of Watauga High School seniors were awarded scholarships worth thousands of dollars in a ceremony Thursday evening at the high school.

The scholarships, supported by local civic organizations or in memory of beloved community members, will assist students headed to two- and four-year colleges as well as those entering the workforce.

Among the highlights of the ceremony were the presentation of a new scholarship in memory of Leigh Cooper Wallace, a teacher and coach who died in December, and three other awards in memory of local librarian Evelyn Johnson from the Kiwanis Foundation of Boone.

A group of 13 Vietnam veterans also presented two awards honoring Harold Dean Beach, who was killed in action, to Chelsea Harrison and Alex Parsons.

The Watauga High School Class of 2013 will graduate at 9 a.m. June 8 at the ASU Holmes Convocation Center.
