'The Secret Church' comes to Boone
by Sherrie Norris
Many church pastors know that it's difficult to get their congregation to sit through two hours of Sunday morning services, but on Good Friday, March 29, thousands of people around the world will come together for six hours of Bible study, prayer and worship as part of "The Secret Church."
Mount Vernon Baptist Church of Boone will host the simulcast event, produced by David Platt, and broadcast live from The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Ala., where Platt pastors.
In 2012, more than 50,000 participants joined the Secret Church simulcast from 49 states and 14 countries.
Mount Vernon's senior pastor Greg Heisler said it his hope that those who attend will find answers to questions that they have -- especially regarding heaven, hell and the end of the world.
"My heart's desire, as a pastor, is to see people grow in God's word," Heisler said. "Secret Church is six hours of intense Bible study, worship, and prayer led by David Platt, the author of 'Radical.' In his travels overseas, Platt discovered the amazing hunger for God's truth in the underground church -- meeting in secret -- for hours upon hours of pouring over God's Word. The simulcast gives us the opportunity to gather together for a focused time of prayer, Bible study and worship to grow in God's grace."
Heisler said that the 2013 Secret Church topics are those which he believes people are curious about, whether they are believers or not.
"With more than 50,000 people from all over the world tuning in to Secret Church, it gives Mount Vernon the opportunity to be a part of what God is doing around the world," he said. "We are a church that is built on Christ and thrives on missions around the world, so Secret Church fits with our church DNA in a powerful way. My prayer is that Secret Church will stir our affections for Christ and give us a fresh zeal for taking the gospel to the nations."
Platt is the author of The New York Times best-seller "Radical" and the "Radical Small Group Study."
He is the founder of Radical, a resource ministry that's been described as one dedicated to serving the church in making disciples of all nations.
Designed for Christians and nonChristians alike and produced by Platt's Radical ministry, the simulcast will cover a wide variety of topics that arouse a variety of emotions and reactions, including curiosity, confusion, joy, hope, fear, anticipation and maybe even anger, according to Platt's office.
These critical topics are often "embellished, fantasized, diluted, abused, or altogether avoided in our day," his team said.
Platt and his team know that many have questions about what they describe as "mind-blowing realities."
He will lead tens of thousands around the globe in an exploration of God's Word in search of answers to those questions and more.
In the end, it is Platt's hope that "several things will become clear," said a spokesperson for his ministry. "We will discover that, despite all the controversy surrounding heaven, hell and the end of the world, several things are clear: Christ will come back, Satan will be defeated, all men will be judged, and the glory of God will cover the earth like the waters cover the sea. And by the end of the night, hopefully and humbly, we will walk away with a cry on our lips and a testimony in our lives that echoes the final cry of the Scriptures: 'Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.'"
The event will be held 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Mount Vernon Baptist Church at
3505 Bamboo Road, Boone. The gym is located on the lower level of the building. For more
