Stop, Drop and Roll 5K planned

by Staff Reports

There's nothing new about the fireman's instructions to "stop, drop and roll" during a fire, but there is something new about the way local firefighters are answering a call to help.

The Watauga County Firefighters Association will host the inaugural Stop! Drop! & Roll! 5K Run and Walk at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, beginning and ending at Boone Fire Department Station 2 on State Farm Road.

The event is multipurposed, said Ronnie Marsh, president of the

Watauga County Firefighters Association, which encompasses 14 fire departments within the county.

While all of the fire departments in the county promote training and education for all local firefighters, they also do a fair share of raising funds for special causes, Marsh said.

"We raise money for scholarships for graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue careers in emergency services and we also support local families of burned victims and survivors through the Watauga County Chapter of the North Carolina Firefighters' Burned Children Fund," he said. "We also donate money each year to families and burn victims treated at the University of North Carolina Medical Center and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center."

The N.C. Firefighters' Burned Children Fund is a nonprofit organization developed by area firefighters to support burn survivors and help prevent burn injuries before they occur, Marsh said.

Marsh sees the upcoming fundraiser as a unique way to get the community involved in helping others.

Early registration for the fundraising event, on or before July 3, is $15; late registration, after July 3, is $20.

Packet pick up will begin at 7 a.m. at the fire department on race day.

T-shirts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

All registered participants will have a chance to win door prizes and must be present to win.

Refreshments will be provided for participants upon completion of the walk and run.

Parking will be available behind the fire station, which is located at the intersection of State Farm Road and Hunting Lane.
