by Staff Reports

Watauga High School student Sierra Mueller placed 16th in cosmetology skills during the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, Mo., in late June.

Mueller competed against students from the continental U.S. and Alaska as well as Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Her competition included four types of hair styling and ratings of her performance in safety, infection control, supplies, official dress, a written professional development exam, written cosmetology knowledge exam and an oral communications exam.

Mueller advanced to the national level after placing first in cosmetology skills in the state conference.
The SkillsUSA Championships is a competition for public high school and college/postsecondary technical students enrolled in career and technical education programs.

The annual event draws more than 5,600 competitors to 94 separate contests that require the on-site demonstration of career-related technical and leadership skills.
