School Counselor Week celebrated

Mabel School counselor Christy Welch and two Mabel students were among a delegation that met last week with State Superintendent June Atkinson in celebration of National School Counselor Week.

The week, which runs from Feb. 4-8, celebrates the role school counselors provide within schools and in students’ lives.

On Friday, Atkinson signed a proclamation announcing the week and commending school counselors for helping students to reach their potential and explore their abilities, strengths and interests.

Welch attended the event as the North Carolina Elementary Counselor of the Year and northwest region vice president of the N.C. School Counselors Association. She was joined by her husband, County Commissioner John Welch, their daughter, Madison Welch, and another Mabel student, Reilly Skene.

Welch said the state superintendent spent a long time visiting with the group.

“We were able to talk to her about our schools and about our role as school counselor in our school,” Welch said.
