Poetry reading to feature Joseph Bathanti
by Staff Reports
The N.C. Poetry Society will celebrate its 80th year with a series of readings across the state organized by and featuring North Carolina’s most prestigious poets.
The state’s current poet laureate, Joseph Bathanti, will read selected poems at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Scholars Bookshop on the Appalachian State University campus. The event will include ASU professors and poets Hilda Downer and Lynn Doyle.
ASU students and local residents are invited to participate in the open mic portion of the program.
Bathanti, a professor of creative writing from Vilas, was named the N.C. Poet Laureate in August. He is also the director of the Writing in the Field program and writer-in-residence of ASU’s Watauga Global Community.
Six other poetry readings will be held Dec. 1 in Charlotte, Durham, Sylva, Winston-Salem, Salter Path and Fountain.
