Poetry open mic at library Saturday
by Anna Oakes
An open mic community poetry event takes place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 20 at the Watauga Public Library.
The free event is presented in conjunction with National Poetry Month and National Library Week and is dedicated to the memory of Evelyn Shook Johnson, who worked at the library for 35 years.
Individuals ages 8 and older may present their own poem or read a favorite poem by another author or simply join the audience and enjoy the poetry recitations.
The event is co-sponsored by the Behind the Stacks poetry group and the Watauga County Public Library, with support from the Friends of the Library and Earl LeClaire, said Paula Finck, one of the organizers.
Finck said she had collaborated with Johnson to plan the poetry event shortly before Johnson's passing in January.
"She was a fixture in the library," Finck said. "She suggested to me that instead of just original poetry that we be more inclusive and also have those who wanted to recite their favorite published poet."
Behind the Stacks formed several years ago as an offshoot of the High Country Writers organization.
"We're doing it mostly to improve our poetry writing and enjoy people. Like any other craft, we have learned different techniques," Finck said. "We welcome newcomers or visitors, too."
