Mountain Home memories
by Staff Reports
More than 200 people packed a gallery at the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum on Sunday for a special St. Patrick's Day-themed concert and presentation honoring Joe Shannon, the founder of the 20-year-old Mountain Home Music series.
Shannon, who is also a retired educator, has served as the director and host of the concert series throughout its existence, only recently stepping down due to the ongoing rigors of cancer. Gov. Pat McCrory recently awarded Shannon the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, which was presented to him at Sunday's concert.
Mountain Home Music regulars the Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys, the Forget-Me-Nots and Strictly Clean and Decent took turns performing and sharing their favorite memories and stories about Shannon, and Maura Shawn Scanlin of the Forget-Me-Nots performed a song she wrote for the community icon.
This week's issues of The Blowing Rocket and Watauga Democrat will feature more photos and comments from the event.
