Mount Vernon to host global simulcast event with Shirer

by Sherrie Norris

Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Boone is serving as a host location for the area's only simulcast featuring the  Bible teaching of popular women's author and speaker, Priscilla Shirer.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at the Boone church, with live coverage from New Orleans.

"Priscilla Shirer Live," sponsored by Nashville-based publishing company LifeWay Christian Resources, will feature Shirer's dynamic storytelling and passionate Bible teaching.

On behalf of Mount Vernon, Allison Critcher, women's ministry team coordinator, agreed with others who have said, "Shirer makes the Bible come alive."

"We have done many of Priscilla's studies," Critcher said, "but this is our first time hosting her simulcast. We are really excited to be a part of this event, as women from all over the globe will be tuning in with us on that day."

Critcher described Shirer as "a dynamic teacher, but also a real wife and mother."

Shirer shares from the heart and from her own life "to help encourage ladies, no matter what stage of life they are in," Critcher said.

Critcher called it a blessing for the women of Mount Vernon to share Shirer's teaching through the simulcast with others in the community.

According to LifeWay, the upcoming event, which will also feature a prayer time, will both challenge and encourage women to grow deeply in their faith.

Shirer has authored a number of published Bible studies, books and devotionals specifically for women, including (LifeWay-published) such as "Gideon: Your Weakness. God's Strength,"  "Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted" and "Discerning the Voice of God."

Shirer was a communications major in college who planned to be a TV news anchor, but God had other ideas, she said. While interning at a Christian radio station in Houston, she began to receive invitations to do Bible studies at small women's events.

At age 18, she began sharing "simple truths of Scripture" that she was studying during her quiet time - and she's been in full-time ministry ever since.

Shirer's ministry is focused on the expository teaching of the Word of God. Her desire is to see women come to a full understanding of who they are in Christ, by hearing the uncompromising truth of Scripture.

She leads her own "Going Beyond Ministries," based in Dallas, Texas.

Recording artist, Anthony Evans, who is Shirer's younger brother, and recently featured on NBC's reality show "The Voice," will be leading worship for the event.

For nearly a decade, Evans has been known for his melodic, thought-provoking style of gospel music as he has emerged as one of Christian music's premiere male vocalists and worship leaders.

Evans' music, which includes five solo projects and two music videos, is described as "crossover that has vibrated the doors of the church and ventured beyond."

Tickets for The Priscilla Shirer Live Simulcast are $15, which includes a full day of music and worship, lunch and opportunities for fellowship with other women from around the High Country.

Tickets may be purchased at Mount Vernon Baptist Church by calling (828) 266-9700 or visiting the office at 3505 Bamboo Road in Boone.
