by Staff Reports
The Boone Service League's third annual Motown in the Mountains fundraiser takes place Friday, April 11, at the Green Park Inn in Blowing Rock.
Doors open at 6 p.m., with music by funk, soul and classic rock band Soul Benefactor cranking up at 6:30 p.m. In addition to music and dancing, the evening includes heavy hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar and live and silent auctions of fabulous offerings from area and regional businesses. Tickets are $40 each. The live auction begins around 8 p.m., with more music to follow.
Soul Benefactor will once again guide High Country music lovers to the dance floor with a set list of timeless Motown tunes honoring the legacy of the legendary Detroit record company. Dance the night away to hits from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Martha & The Vandellas and more. Joining the band will be members of Boone's Junaluska Gospel Choir.
This year's auction packages include passes to Disney World, tickets to the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race in Charlotte, tickets to Chetola Resort's Symphony by the Lake, a weekend getaway to Abingdon, Va., a weeklong stay in Hilton Head, ASU football tickets, ski resort lift tickets, gift certificates from the area's finest restaurants and much, much more.
Jesse Miller of Watauga Insurance Agency will serve as auctioneer.
Established in 1957, the Boone Service League is a women's civic organization serving Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties. Each year, the Boone Service League awards grants to High Country organizations and presents scholarships to high school seniors. Boone Service League members also hold food and supplies drives, volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program and provide financial assistance for families in crisis.
Boone Service League President Susan Phipps noted that Motown is the nonprofit's largest fundraiser of the year.
"It's really important that we raise a lot of money at this particular event," said Phipps. "There are more and more requests for assistance in this economy. The needs are great."
Sponsors of this year's fundraiser include Tar Heel Basement Systems, Allen Wealth Management, Boone Dermatology Clinic, Boone Ford Lincoln Mercury, Gary and Emily Childers, Emily Angle Photography, OrthoCarolina, Blue Ridge Plastic Surgery Group, Echota, Robert H. Bridgeman DDS, the ASU Office of Arts and Cultural Programs, Appalachian Ski Mountain, Bubbles Car Wash and many others.
