'Midnight' event to benefit OASIS
by Anna Oakes
Midnight at the OASIS -- the 10th annual fundraiser for Watauga County's women's shelter -- takes place this Saturday, May 4, from 7-11 p.m. at Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock.
Tickets are $35 per person. The event features dance music by the band Laditude, heavy Middle Eastern-inspired hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar.
OASIS Inc. (Opposing Abuse with Service, Information and Shelter) is celebrating 35 years of helping survivors leave abusive relationships and begin new lives of independence.
"It really is a time to celebrate the fact that this community continues to support these services," said Rebecca Gummere, associate director of OASIS. "A lot of what we do is so confidential ... so this is the one time that we're very public."
In addition, Midnight at the OASIS is an opportunity to raise awareness about the ongoing reality of domestic violence and sexual abuse facing women, children and men in this county each day.
OASIS' clients included 363 adults and 363 children in 2012, including 45 sexual assault cases.
"That continues a pretty steady increase," Gummere said.
Over the past year, OASIS staff members have worked closely with Appalachian State University and its Interpersonal Violence Task Force to improve prevention programs and response services for victims of abuse and sexual crimes within the campus community.
In addition, OASIS has agreed to temporarily provide services to clients in Avery County due to the recent closure of New Day of Avery County Inc.
Tickets to Midnight at the OASIS are available for sale by cash or check at the OASIS office at 225 Birch Street, Suite 4, in Boone or with a credit card online at http://www.oasisinc.org. For more information, call (828) 264-1532.
