Mays resigns as App Voices director

by Anna Oakes

Willa Mays announced that she is stepping down as executive director of Boone-based environmental organization Appalachian Voices in a newsletter published Jan. 26.

Mays had more than 20 years of experience in the nonprofit field, including with the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation and the Greater Yellowstone Coalition, when she became executive director of Appalachian Voices in 2009.

"It has been an exciting and extremely rewarding four years as we have taken our cause to new heights," Mays said in the newsletter.

Tom Cormons, who has led the organization's Virginia office for several years, will replace Mays as executive director.

With offices in Boone, Charlottesville, Va., Nashville, Tenn., and Washington, D.C., Appalachian Voices is committed to protecting the land, air and water of the central and southern Appalachian Region, focusing on reducing coal's impact and advancing a vision for a cleaner energy future.
