Locals empty bowls at charity benefit

by Tom Mayer

The Hunger & Health Coalition's 13th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser drew hundreds of supporters to the Watauga High School event Saturday. For a minimum $15 donation, attendees got to choose a handmade pottery bowl, which they then could fill with soup, stew or barbecue from a choice of more than a dozen local restaurants which supported the event. Guests then could take home their empty bowl as a reminder of the food insecurity many local people deal with daily.

In addition to the meal, the event hosted a silent auction, music and a performance by WHS theater students.

Results of the event will be made available this week, according to event organizers.
