Library to celebrate season with December events

With the holiday season fast approaching, the Friends of the Watauga Public Library is gearing up to bring in the season in style.

The library will host a holiday book and basket sale from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 6 and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 7.

Fiction and nonfiction books will be for sale, as well as gift baskets handpicked by the Friends. Children can visit Candy Cane Corner, where they can purchase and wrap gifts for family members.

"I think this is going to be our best holiday book sale ever," said Claire Olander, a member of the Friends of the Watauga Public Library's executive board. "It's so family friendly and especially geared toward kids."

After the Boone Christmas parade on Dec. 7, the library will host a reception with homemade cookies, apple juice and hot chocolate. There will be crafts for the children while parents shop for books. Santa will also make an appearance at the event.

And at 1 p.m. on Dec. 7, Steve Somers will present the Arctic Express, a magical imaginary train ride looking at winter's festivals and holidays around the world.

"It's really going to be about the kids," Olander said. "I think it's going to be a really terrific experience for families."
