Junior golf clinics return to golf center
by Frank Ruggiero
For 26 years, Sayre, golf pro and owner of Mountaineer Golf Center Driving Range in Boone, has presented this two-day event that allows children interested in golf to learn from the pros.
Designed for ages 7 to 17, 2014's Junior Golf Clinics will take place Tuesday and Thursday, May 20 and 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. each day. Sessions cost $5 apiece, which includes balls, clubs, instruction, prizes and more.
Furthermore, instruction comes courtesy of area golf professionals.
"All the area pros come in, pitch in and volunteer to help us out," Sayre said. "So, we get a lot of support from the clubs, private and public courses all around, which is always a big help. And we get some great guys with great instruction, so that's a big deal."
The clinics offer newcomers an affordable opportunity to grow acquainted with the game, while providing more experienced players a chance to hone their skills and learn some tips from the pros. Regardless of skill level, participants have one thing in common -- fun.
"Oh, they have a ball," Sayre said. "Well, they hit thousands. They love it, and a lot of the kids have gone on and started here and played on the high school teams, and some even went out for the college teams, so it's just a good way to get started."
Sayre started the clinic as a way to give back to the community that's supported his business throughout the years.
"I always felt like I should give back, and as long as I've been here, I've been trying to have something at least once a year," he said.
Those looking to participate may do so the day of the clinic, although Sayre strongly recommends they beat the rush and register in advance by visiting Mountaineer Golf Center, located at 115 Beverly Heights Ave., just behind Papa John's Pizza off N.C. 105 in Boone. For more information, call Sayre at (828) 264-6830.
