Jamie Shell, longtime sports editor for The Avery Journal-Times, a sister publication of the Watauga Democrat, is the recipient of the first-ever Western Highlands Conference Sportswriter of the Year Award.

The award was announced during the Avery High School Athletic Awards Banquet on May 22, and Shell received the award during the inaugural Avery High School senior awards dinner on May 27.

"Jamie Shell is truly the heartbeat of our conference," Avery County Schools Athletic Director Jay Smith said.

"He does a great job for all sports, but, as an example, his annual football preview is outstanding -- it's better than anything the Asheville Citizen Times does. It's just amazing what Jamie does every year for the Western Highlands Conference," Smith said.

Conference directors and coaches voted to choose the inaugural recipient of the award.

"I am deeply honored that the conference's athletic directors thought so kindly of me to bestow such a prestigious honor," Shell said.

"This award is a testimony to the countless coaches, student-athletes, parents and staff who make my work the labor of love that it is," he said.

Also during the awards dinner, Joe and Susan Hawkins were recognized with a standing ovation for their service to athletic training at Avery High School.
