‘Horn in the West' auditions Feb. 11

by Lauren K. Ohnesorge

The 61st season of Boone's outdoor drama “Horn in the West” starts June 15, but the tradition starts Saturday, Feb. 11, with local auditions at the Valborg Theatre on the campus of Appalachian State University.

Don't expect what you saw last year, Horn spokeswoman Virginia Roseman said.

“This year, none of the spots are filled,” she said.

That means no pre-casting for the 13 principle parts. All parts, she said, are up for grabs.

“It's to make sure everyone has a chance,” she said.

Along with 13 principle parts, Horn in the West is casting 10 chorus members, 10 dancers, 10 actor-techs and 10 villagers.

The script, however, will be the same adaptation of the Kermit Hunter original that audiences saw last year, she said.

The auditions are at 9 a.m. Feb. 11 at  Valborg Theatre.

“Horn in the West,” tells the story of Daniel Boone and the Revolutionary War, complete with fire dances, battle scenes and heart-wrenching drama.

Written by Hunter more than 60 years ago, the play details the lives of pioneers braving the wilderness to settle in the Blue Ridge Mountains and away from British tyranny.

In addition to local auditions, the show finds actors through the Institute of  Outdoor Drama auditions and South Eastern Theatre Conference  auditions.

The outdoor drama runs Friday, June 15 through Saturday, Aug. 11.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $9 for children. Discounts are available.
